How to hire help at home safely.

Whether it’s a nanny, a cleaner, a carer or a driver, you’re letting someone into your home. Here’s how to feel sure before the first day.

Five checks before you say yes

Each one covers something the others miss.

Identity and right to work
See photo ID. If you employ them directly, you must check they have the right to work in the UK.

A DBS check where it applies
For nannies and carers, ask about an up-to-date DBS certificate. For nannies in England, Ofsted registration is another good sign.

Two references, called yourself
Speak to two past families or clients. Ask what they’d want you to know, not just whether they’d recommend them.

Their Reputation Record
Ask for their Record ID. Years of good work are there to see, along with how any past disagreements were settled.

A paid trial and a written agreement
Start with a paid trial session, then agree hours, pay, duties and notice in writing.

Do they have to pay to share their record?

No. Having a record, sharing it and replying to anything on it are always free.

What if they don’t have a record yet?

Send them the ask message from our homepage. It takes a few minutes to set up, and the next person they deal with can check it straight away.

Is it fair to ask for a record?

Yes. Good nannies, cleaners and carers often have no way to prove years of work. A record gives them that proof, and it’s theirs to keep.
